Camper of the Day: Elizabeth

Friday, July 30th, 2010

We’re only a couple days into session 6 at Windells Camp but all summer long we’ve had a great variety of Campers of the Day from all ability levels around the world. Today we found Elizabeth who at 16 years old she’s traveled out to camp from California to progress her park riding. She’s been on and off the mountain for 4 years but wanting to work on her park skills at camp.

Why did you decide to come to Windells Camp?
Elizabeth: I saw it online and it looked amazing. What better to do in the summer than to snowboard?

What tricks are you working on this session?
Elizabeth: 180’s and to get something done in the halfpipe. Hopefully I’ll land a rail too.

Who is your coach and how do you like the coaching?
Elizabeth: Murphy. He’s really funny, chill and just cool.

Any funny moments on the mountain?
Elizabeth: Murphy did a funny hollar off the halfpipe today. It sounded like someone dying…this mid-air ARRRRRHGHHHHH.

How are you liking the on-campus activities?
Elizabeth: I’m loving it, the trampolines are the best. Both the ones inside BOB and outside are fun.

Who is your counselor and how do you like hanging out with them?
Elizabeth: I have Katie and Krista. They are really nice actually, we basically facebook stalk everybody. We’ve been trying to look at people who look like our counselors.

Do you want to come back to Windells Camp next year?
Elizabeth: Definitely!

What are you looking forward to this week?
Elizabeth: Tomorrow’s rafting trip!

Any shoutouts?
Elizabeth: Hi mom and dad and little brother Sam and my two turtles.

Stoked to have Elizabeth out at Windells Camp and getting her tricks dialed! Stay tuned for more Campers of the Day as session 6 continues on!

~ Welches, OR ~

Windells Academy is proud to announce Miah Wheeler as the new snowboard director and head coach of Windells Academy. “We are excited to have someone who brings such a variety of strengths to the table at Windells Academy. With almost a decade of coaching experience, Miah is going to be a vital asset to our team,” asserts camp owner and industry veteran, Tim Windell.

Wheeler comes to Windells Academy from Aspen, Colorado where he served for 9 years with the Aspen Valley Snowboard Club as the program director and head coach. He has been heavily involved with United States of America Snowboard Association (USASA), serving on the executive board as the coaches representative, running the Aspen/Snowmass Series, developing the coaches education program and serving as the head coach for the PacSun/USASA team.

President of Windells Academy, Mike Hanley explains, “if we see the growth in the academy that Miah has demonstrated in his previous endeavors, we are well on track to be the largest action sports academy the world.”

Wheeler is excited for the opportunity. “I’m stoked to bring my experience to the world class facilities that Windells has to offer. Where else can you snowboard/skateboard/surf 365 days a year, as well as take advantage of a holistic education that encompasses mind and body. Having exclusive access to airbags, Olympic flybed trampolines, a foampit, and one of the best skateparks in the world is only going to fire the progression of up and coming rippers.”

Camper of the Day: Cody

Friday, July 30th, 2010

We’ve been enjoying beautiful warm weather on the mountain at session 6 and our triple jump line in the Windells private park continues to go off each day! We caught up with ski coach Jeff Curry for our latest Camper of the Day and found 17 year New Yorker Cody. Cody skis at Mt Snow, Vermont during the winter and today he stomped an unnatural misty seven first try! His great attitude and ability to keep trying new tricks made him a standout in the jump line at Windells.

Why did you decide to come to Windells Camp?
Cody: Cause it has a sick skate park, all the facilities are awesome, coaches are cool and the hill is awesome too, the jumps, the rails, everything.

What have you learned so far at camp?
Cody: Rightside underflip 5, rightside misty 7, switch rodeo, some rail tricks. That’s it, gonna step it up tomorrow.

What other tricks do you want to learn at camp?
Cody: Switch misty, maybe a king flip but that’s a high expectation. That’s it really, maybe some more rightside stuff.

What do you think about the session 6 on-snow features?
Cody: It’s great, I think it’s better than last year’s session 3. I thought the snow would be bad this session cause it’s later in the summer but it’s awesome. The one big jump is really sweet and the three jump line and rails are better this year.

Who is your coach and how do you like the coaching?
Cody: Jeff Curry, he’s the man. His coaching is awesome, he gives you great tips and he’s a good guy.

How do you like the on-campus activities?
Cody: It’s awesome, I go to the skatepark the new cement concrete jungle and shred it up. I’m not very good at skateboarding but I’ve been practicing.

Who is your counselor and how do you like your cabin?
Cody: Cody the snowboarder guy is my counselor for roadhouse. It’s fun, there’s a lot of kids so it’s pretty messy, kind of gross. I tend to go to sleep way earlier than everyone else cause I’m always beat.

Any shoutouts?
Cody: Yeah Parker White’s switch right dub. Mt Snow represent!

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

Richie Conklin, Oliver Bacharach and Sam Mercer, more commonly referred to as the Zombie Death Crew, spend a day in the Windells park going fast with no regrets. These dudes have great attitudes, super good style, and get extra bonus  points for the G.G. Allin in the video. I found this video over at MethodMag’s wesbite. Thanks for rollin through ZDC. You could also check out the the Zombie Death Crew blog for some funny updates, and to see what these up and comers have going on.

Best Day Ever

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Salomon's Scotty Arnold with a backside grab here at Windells.

Headed to the mini West Linn skatepark with the session 5 skate campers (those kids rule) earlier this week and met a former Windells camper. He was all hyped on the new concrete park and skating with the kids. He gave me the heads up to a link on the ESPN Snowboarding blog where some of the Videograss and Salomon crew gave an overview of the “Best Day Ever” which involved skating the new concrete park here at Windells.

Session 4 – Snowboarding

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

Session 4 was a heavy one, both on and off the snow. Tech-Nine was at Hood for their Team Session here at Windells and T9 team riders MFM, Jonah Owen, Dylan Thompson, Lucas Magoon, Chris Bradshaw, Brady Larson, and Ben Bilodeau put it down on their Dream Feature. These dudes put the effort into making sure that their setup was progressive, and always changing.
