Train for Success
While pushups and sit-ups might work for some sports, we know that it is not always the biggest and strongest skier and ends up at the top of the podium. The basis of our training here at Windells Academy revolves around giving skiers the tools that they need to get the most out of the mountain. We understand that everyone is different, so we cater our training to each individual athlete. Mornings do begin with a core training session for everyone in order to ensure a standard of fitness and encourage a healthy lifestyle.
Unlike many other sports, freestyle skiing is not linear. This concept is what makes our sport great because it does not put a limit on anyone. An upright 720 is not a prerequisite for a cork 720, the same way that an inverted-double is not a prerequisite for an off-axis double. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Our goal is to build on strengths while simultaneously diminishing weaknesses. There is no one body type or personality type that will guarantee greatness, so we find a way to make that body type match the personality that you want to portray on the snow. The final result is a fun environment based around progression.
We take this same mentality to the competitive world of freeskiing at regional events all the way to the X Games. Start gate experience counts for a lot in this sport, that is to say the more that you compete the more comfortable you will get with it. Competition is not mandatory, but we find that healthy competition encourages development both as an athlete and an individual. Because skiers at Windells Academy are also students and young adults, we feel that it is important to transfer these qualities from the snow to their everyday lives.
We know that life presents challenges just like learning a new spin on snow. There is a certain level of fear that accompanies any venture into the unknown whether it is a switch-cork 720 or a chemistry course. Taking your time to learn how to build off your strengths while diminishing your weaknesses promotes a positive outlook which will create the best possible results!
This formula has seen student-athletes progress to the X Games, World Championships and Dew Tour in addition to acceptance at universities around the world from Chamonix to the University of California and the University of Colorado to name a few!
