Tis the season for video premiers and the Academy is getting in on the action. Poor Boys Production, “Revolver” swept through Portland and although it was scheduled for a school night, we managed to squeeze it in before bed time.

Snowboarders and skiiers alike attended the movie to meet their favorite athletes, check out their first video premier and get some inspiration for the upcoming season.  Poor Boys Production owned up to their reputation by delivering footage from all over the globe. Simon Dumont, Sammy Carlson and Tim Durtschi were just a few of the athletes to tear it up in Alaska, British Columbia, France and North America.

Academy students were pumped to get their first taste of what premier season has to offer. They were inspired to return to Mt. Hood and start perfecting their own moves and begin filming. Attending premiers has become a priority for the students as a well. Video screenings are a great opportunity to meet with industry people, have fun and get immersed into the ski and snowboard community.

“It was great to see the kids share their opinions amongst themselves. Students attending these premiers are important for our industry. They are the future and they have a say how the films are going to progress” commented Lisa Dougherty, student advisor at Windells Academy.  The Academy is filling their calendars with 2010-11 premier dates and we are pumped to see you there! You can bet by the end of this season Windells Academy students will be on their way to becoming film industry coinsures.

The Academy’s “Legit” Surf Trip

Friday, September 24th, 2010

[[Show as slideshow]]

Windells Academy presents many opportunities for students to try their hands at all types of action sports and surfing is no exception.  Mike Hanley, president of Windells Academy invited students to the Oregon Coast for a chance to catch some waves.

Students and staff were welcomed to their surf spot, Short Sands with sunshine. After zipping up their wetsuits everyone was given a lesson on how to paddle out, stand up and ride a wave in by Hanley. After that it was into the water to see what they could do. “I felt like a beach dude for the 1st time ever. I was shredding the Gnar… like real Gnar. It was legit” commented Adam Sawalhah, 14 from Tennessee on his first surfing experience.

Surfing is challenging in ways different than those in other action sports such as skateboarding, skiing or snowboarding.  Michelle Lu, senior from British Columbia explains, “Surfing is so different from other sports! You can just stop when you need to with snowboarding and skateboarding. In surfing you have the water and you don’t always have control.”

The unfamiliar terrain, however, didn’t get in the way of students having fun and coming together as a team. Whether it was overcoming a fear of water, trying to coach one another or merely giving props for riding a “sick” wave, the students proved to be both supportive and inspiring.  “We’re like a family. It was cool, I felt like a champ. It was like I was on a podium or something when everyone was cheering me on and giving me high fives” said Adam.  Students shared the thrill of a new sport as a family.

After a couple hours of surfing everyone got warm by the fire built by Windells head cook Ryan Falk, who also joined the surf trip. At the end of the day students helped each other pry their wet suits off, brush the sand off and head to the van for along and much needed nap on the way home.

In my opinion, which is obviously bias, Windells has the most talented ski coaching lineup ever!  On top of having the most progressive coaches, the private parks and lifts at Windells are frequented by the highest level of athletes of all time, it blows my mind!

I want to take this time to thank all coaches and guests (including campers) for contributing to Windells, and helping make it THE FUNNEST PLACE ON EARTH.  Below are some of my favorite photos from the past summer.  (and thanks to our sponsors too)

Congratulation Nick Visconti for winning HDHR!

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Nick Visconti is Windells family. He was a camper growing up and now as a pro rider, he comes back every summer to hold a session and ride, skate and hang out with campers. This past weekend, Nick started off the 2010/11 season by winning the first event of the fall, Bear Mountain’s Hot Dawgz & Hand Rails. We got a moment to catch up with Nick and get the lowdown on the weekend.

Congratulations for kicking off your season by grabbing first at HDHR last weekend at Bear! How was the scene at the contest?

It was HELLA sick. I say hella with emphasis because Southern Cali people hate on our NorCal vocab. Hella good people. Hella sick set up. Hella love and good vibes.

Besides winning, what was the best part of the weekend in SoCal?
Connecting and reconnecting with people. I met a lot of snowboard industry people I hadnt before. I reconnected with a ton of great long distance friends. Relationships is what its about–I get stoked to maintain and create new ones. We are all ‘boarders and can connect there, but it’s amazing to explore different realms of relationships once we establish a friendship.

A lot of Windells campers are gearing up for their seasons where they’ll be competing at their home mountains in tons of contests–what do you do while competing to stay focused, have a good time and ride your best?
As cliche as it all may be, fun is the reason we are doing this. Fun with homies. fun shredding, fun dancing, fun partying, whatever. But, I think it’s very important to focus. Everything we want is obtainable, if we are willing to work for it.

Any advice for young riders who haven’t ever entered a competition but want to do it?

Go with a buddy. It’s importnat to have a confidence builder and a face in the contest or audience that you can connect with for support.
You pulled off a banger video part in “Right Brain Left Brain” and just opened up with a big contest win…the 2011 season is off and running for you, what are your plans between now and when the snow starts flying?
Thank you. I truly believe in the stimulation of the brain and reinspiring my mind, so, I am in school studying philosophy and speech communication in the fall. I will just be rehabing and inspirning all aspects of life. mental, physical, spiritual.
What was your playlist of songs in your ears while you were riding?
playlist? uhhh how about 1 song on repeat. Lady gaga bad romance
